NERC Threatens To Dissolve Discos’ Boards Over Poor Performances

| The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has threatened to dissolve the Boards of the electricity distribution companies over their continued poor performances since they took over the successor-companies of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), more than three years ago. This threat from the industry regulator is coming as the Federal Government through the Honorable Minister of Power, Works and Housing has told the Discos to improve their services if they must avoid losing customers or running out of business once the generation companies commence selling electricity to eligible customers. The Commissioner, Engineering Performance and Monitoring, NERC, Prof. Frank Okafor, disclosed the mindset of the industry regulator during the 16th Power Sector Operators’ meeting held in Enugu State on Monday, 12th June, 2017. Prof. Okafor explained that NERC was looking at various sanctions, including calling off the boards of some Discos and replacing them, adding that NERC has constitutional right, just like the Central Bank of Nigeria does to the banks, to sack the boards and appoint new ones.
